A Brief History of Mandala Art
Mandalas are rich in history and meaning, serving as powerful symbols of wholeness and unity across cultures. The term “mandala” comes from the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit meaning “CIRCLE” and are used extensively in Hindu and Buddhist religions and date back to 1500 B.C. Mandala-like symbols appear in Native American cultures, Mesoamerican civilizations, like the Mayans and Aztecs. Historically, mandalas signify unity, wholeness, and the cyclical nature of life. A mandala is any representational picture such as a drawing, painting or geometric pattern that represents either the universe or something from the world. No two mandalas are identical, but all are beautiful and colourful works of art. Creating a complex mandala can take an enormous amount of patience and resolve and may take several weeks to complete. Yet the process is meditative, fulfilling, fun and rewarding. Psychiatrist Carl Jung explored the psychological significance of mandalas, viewing them as representations of the self and tools for achieving self-understanding and acceptance. He believed that creating mandalas could help individuals integrate unconscious material and attain a deeper understanding of their psyche. In contemporary society, mandalas have transcended their spiritual origins and are now used for artistic expression and mental health well-being. They are popular in adult colouring books, serving as a means for relaxation and stress relief. Mandalas continue to resonate with individuals seeking connection, balance, and understanding in an ever-evolving world. Their evolution from ancient spiritual tools to modern artistic expressions highlights their enduring relevance to the human experience. Whether viewed through a spiritual lens or appreciated for their aesthetic beauty, mandalas offer insights into the interconnectedness of life and the universe.
